Why I created this website
I am creating this website to help other mental health professionals who just got out of college and are looking for tools and interventions. But if I could really go back in time, I will tell myself. It’s not just external resources, the main ingredient is internal resources that reside in you.
- FAITH IN YOUR CLIENT: The main key ingredient to being a successful counselor is making that connection with your client. You need to be able to have that connection so that your client can feel and know that you care, and you have faith in them that they can change.
- FAITH IN YOURSELF: Use your personality, your hobbies, your likes, and your skills to bring about change. It’s in you. It is all about knowing who you are, and how you can invest in yourself to be better mental health professional. Learn from your experience, your failures, and your successes.
- LET FAITH DO THE MAGIC: Once you have that connection and trust yourself, all you need is to find the right tool (intervention) that works best for your client. Each and every client is unique in their own way. So, finding the intervention that speaks to them is the last trick
What does the website consist of?
- COUNSELING SESSIONS: This website will give you different ideas that you can incorporate into your counseling sessions I like to be organized and prepared before my sessions. So, these are the ideas that I try to have each session such as starting with beginning sessions focused on building a therapeutic alliance, and later on specific skill-based interventions and therapy ideas which is why they are numbered.
-
COUNSELING TOPICS: I will also be writing ideas about resources and other things you can incorporate into those sessions. If I really like searching for worksheets from other websites, I will definitely be putting the link, so that you have more websites (counseling resources) in your toolset. www.therapistaid.com is my favorite.
Cool techniques to make your session structured.
- USE OF NOTEBOOK: I start my 1st session by giving them their own notebook. It costs money, but it is all worth it. If money is an issue, you can just staple white papers. This notebook can also help you remember what kids shared, and counseling skills they can review, and will also help you with what you discussed in previous sessions. I also have my own counseling book that I share with the kids, and also use to remember the activities. Please see examples from my notebook I show to the kids.
- USE OF POWERPOINT FOR TELEHEALTH TO REPLACE NOTEBOOK: Okay, so, telehealth is a challenge. Everyone knows that. But I love using PowerPoint instead of a notebook. It is free. The only thing you will need is a platform where you can share your screen and a secure computer. Through the PowerPoint, the kids/teenagers can find pictures (favorite characters like Pikachu, celebrities’) and put them in their PowerPoint. My favorite part is, that I type up everything that I plan to teach or explore, and write down their reactions or words. And this can be easily used to write your notes. It is like concurrent writing. BOOM!!! Please see the example of the PowerPoint below.
