6th Session: Locus of Control

Triggers and how I feel

From the previous sessions, the patient learned that: It is okay to feel the way we feel when we go through a difficult situation or event. Learning to observe and regulate is key.

  1. Triggers: Trigger is the external and internal experience that causes a reaction. The more a person can figure out what makes them feel a certain way, they can be more aware of it and have a plan on how to handle it better.
  2. What feelings am I creating: Then the next part is to see if those triggers remind or add feelings related to a strong belief system related to past experiences. This section can also help explore the belief system if there are themes that are arising more often.

Locus of Control

The concept of locus of control can really help the children focus on taking responsibility for their actions, feelings, and thoughts. This can help them focus on hope, change, being determined, and help them be persistent regardless of any situation they are in.

  1. Let go of things you cannot control: This can really help them put their energy into positive actions rather than giving their energy to things that are out of their control.
  2. Change things you can control: This can not only help the kids focus on (positive words, positive actions, and positive thoughts) but it can also help them be hopeful that their actions might also affect things they cannot control (for example their destiny, future, other people, or other external circumstances).
